Numerous sites were found in the northern part of the survey region, while the number of sites in the southern part was smaller (Fig. 1). All the sites where potsherds were found dated to the Byzantine period and it appears that the rest of the sites also dated to this period, based on the nature of finds. Twenty-eight sites were documented in the survey.

The diffusion of sites in the area indicates that the northern part of the survey region was apparently used for agriculture, as it consisted of farms, watchman’s huts and cultivation plots. The sites in the southern part were also agricultural in nature. It seems that the entire region was part of the agricultural hinterland of Be’er Sheva‘ and the surrounding settlements (Horbat Hur) in the Byzantine period.
